The New Face of Homelessness

For many people in Rochester, the crushing snowfall this year is one that will not soon be missed. But for those without homes — especially homeless families — the challenges of this winter were altogether more difficult.

Despite varying data suggesting that the overall rate of homelessness is up or down, what is undeniable is that the face of homelessness in America is changing rapidly. Today families are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population, accounting for nearly 40 percent of all homeless individuals. And among these homeless families, it is mothers with one or more children that are most common.
